Phone: 702.731.1521 Notes: Located at the Miracle Mile Shops in the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino From Roxy-- When Quiksilver decided to start a women's line in 1990, it was a gutsy move. The surf market has always been a fickle one. And female surfers, despite their achievements in and out of the water, hadn't drummed up nearly the notoriety nor the community that guys had long enjoyed. But great ideas always take some guts. And the company saw the untapped women's surf market as a huge opportunity. Turns out they were right. Like all things Quiksilver, Roxy was born in the water; initially a swimwear line, it debuted in late summer 1990 to immediate success. By the next year, a Roxy sportswear line was introduced, and that too prospered, with sales of over $1 million. 1992 saw continued expansion of the brand with a new denim line and key snowwear pieces. The fact that Roxy was a women's line offered by an authentic surf brand made it intriguing for both retailers and girls alike. It was the first of its kind on the market, and soon after, the other surf brands followed. By 1993, Roxy was on a serious roll. The ever-popular Roxy logo was born, a heart-shaped crest adapted from the recognizable Quiksilver logo. The brand's popularity was growing, as was its staff. And then one afternoon in Hawaii, as legend has it, the Roxy crew was sitting on a beach watching the surf when they came up with the idea of the women's board short. Offering fit and flexibility while still managing to be feminine, the women's boardshort was an innovation that forever changed the women's surf market. It was also the perfect example of what the Roxy brand had originally set out to be, in the words of Quiksilver's 1990 Annual Report: "Fun, Bold, Athletic, Daring and Classy". The boardshort became a huge trend. Roxy, and women's surfing along with it, was suddenly the next big thing. 1994 marks another major milestone for Roxy: Lisa Andersen, then the reigning ASP Female World Champion, became the first member of the Roxy team. Lisa went on to win three more world titles, and along with them, crossover mass-market fame. She is considered by many to be the most influential surfer in the history of women's surfing, and her contributions to the Roxy brand and the team continue to play a key role in Roxy's success. Under her guidance, the Boardrider's Team has grown into the most respected and accomplished pro team in women's surfing. Current team members include: Megan Abubo, Chelsea Georgeson, Veronica Kay, Kassia Meador, Kula Barbieto, 'tween surfing phenom Carissa Moore, and reigning world champ Sofia Mulanovich. A Roxy-branded professional event was a natural progression from team sponsorship, and thus the first annual Quiksilver/Roxy Women's Pro Surfing event was born. It took place in winter 1995 on Sunset Beach, Oahu's North Shore. Ten years later, the Roxy Pro Hawaii remains one of the most prestigious and exciting ASP World Championship surf events of the year. The success of this event led to other Roxy competitions, including: the Roxy Pro Fiji, the Roxy Pro Gold Coast (Australia), and the Roxy Jam UK, all ASP World Championship Tour events; the Roxy Pro Women's Surf Festival (Australia), one of the biggest World Qualifying Series events on the tour; and a series of amateur surf contests for young surfers the world over. With such substantial event sponsorship and an ever-expanding team, Roxy is proud to be the largest corporate sponsor of women's surfing worldwide. As Roxy's popularity has grown so has its product line and its audience. Accessories and eyewear joined the mix in 1995; footwear, watches, and Roxy Girl, a line for girls aged 7-16, emerged the following year. Roxy enjoyed its New York Fashion week debut at The Girl's Rule Show in 1996, the same year the brand was nominated for The "California Rising Star Award" for design innovation and excellence. A snow line including outerwear and accessories was added in 1997, along with Teenie Wahine, Roxy's children's line. 1999 was big, with jewelry, bags, backpacks, travel accessories, skate gear, and Roxy Room, a line of bedding, lamps, and posters. By the end of the '90's, Roxy had become the brand for girls everywhere, enjoying mass-market appeal without losing its core audience.

Rain Shoes
The other day when it was absolutely POURING, my mom lent me her "rain shoes" to work. And they were marvellous! It was good in the rain and it looked incredible. Here are her criterias:
- Made in a waterproof material- preferably in black pantent. My mom is CRAZY about it. She even made me buy school shoes in that material when I was a kid when they were so NOT the thing.
- They should be in a classic style, for the obvious reason that it should last you through the test of time.
- It should also have just a bit of height so your feet don't get drenched. (Thats why I prefer these rain shoes over flips flops, because getting dirty water from the pavement all over ones feet is just not fun)
- Lastly, they should be relatively cheap. After all, they are for the rain.
Now I am very inspired to get my own pair of "rain shoes," good thing patent is all over the place.
These are not exactly the classic style or anything but the platforms look GORGEOUS. And I love the color. These two are from Nine West and Marc by MJ (I know, not exactly cheap..).
Then there are these stylish wedges. With these sturdy wedge heels from Nine West and Urban Outfitters, you won't even have to worry about slipping!
I LOVE these chunky black heels from Marc by MJ and Naturalizer. They look fabulous AND they are comfortable to walk in.
Then there are the sexy classic pointy black heels. These two are from Aldo and Nine West.
For something a little bit lower, there are these cute black patent kitten heels from Moschino Cheap n Chic and Steve Madden.

Rubber Sandals
This season there seems to be a revival of the rubber sandals (actually, were they ever alive?).

Mostly thanks to Marc by Marc Jacobs and these rubber flats and gladiator sandals. Flats and gladiator sandals are fine, but plastic?? Please! They look like toy shoes (although I think even barbie has nicer shoes than these). Granted at $95 they are the cheapest Marc by MJ shoes one can find at full price, its so not worth it.

To make it worst, the high street stores, like Urban Outfitters above, have started making them at even lower prices. What a coup this "trend" must be for the fashion industry, to be able to sell rubber shoes that probably costs less than 50C to make at $95 (for m by mj) and $16 (for UO).
Please. Keep the rubber sandals to the beach!

Resort 07 Wrap up
More than a decade ago, RTW shows were just for the buyers and VIP clients. Now, RTW shows are huge events that we can all log onto style.com and see videos and photos the next day. Just last week, Dior and Chanel held resort collection shows in NY in an unusually grand scale -that is with the buyers, press, celebs and after-parties. Are other labels going to follow this step? We'll see next year.
Christian Dior
This collection confirms that skirts and dresses are still the main focus next year. I love the way John Galliano used one or two choices of fabric per dress but managed to create so many different styles and cuts. Most of the collection seemed to be made of bright, shiny material, which according to style.com was laminated cotton and metallic linen. In the rare cases of pants, skinny pants are still Dior's choice. The bright, solid blocks of colour throughout the collection reminded me a bit of the disco times.
The left outfit is perfect for the fashion-foward business women. The dress on the right reminds me of Preen.
I don't know how anyone in real life would wear the dress on the left, but I can't get the image of Sasha in it out of my head! Metallic trench coat on the right.
Sexy and sooo cool.
LOVE these two dresses. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I hope high street stores will make similar dresses, esp the asymmetrical gold one!
Chanel
Usually I don't have much to say about Chanel's collections, but I really liked the casual, spring feel of this collection. But the knee-length gladiators are just... not great. Karl Lagerfeld really needs to work on the shoes he puts on the Chanel runway. Here are some pretty pieces:
Classic Chanel black and white prominent throughout the collection. The cute string bow thing in the hair reminds me of the Chanel haute couture shows.
Love the black leather coat on the left. If only I could afford it!
Pretty dresses! Notice the details on the dress on the left, and the accessories on the right.
The left is for the young and cute. The right is for the sophisticated.

Red-striped tops
Remember a few months back, black & white striped tops were all the rage? Now that we're in Spring/ Summer, it seems like red striped tops are the way to go. As demonstrated by the trend-setting girls of LA:
Nicole Richie -This top has got much more 'design' on it than the other celebs' tops, so it's def not a basic striped top. I love the bits of solid red -makes the top more different.
Mary Kate Olsen -As expected from MK, it's oversized. I know some people are always complaining how MK dresses too oversized, but has it occured to these people that maybe MK simply feels more comfortable in oversized clothes? She's been a much watched-out for celeb since she was a baby, so maybe she doesn't feel the need to wear obviously very styled outfits all the time and impress people (such as Nicole.) Oops rambling, anyways, this grey & red thick striped top of MK's is perfect for very casual outtings.
Mischa Barton -Very simple basic white & red striped top. Notice that she's also got a black & white striped scarf on -it sort of blends in with the top.
This long T-shirt is by Lux (Urban Outfitters.) I'm not a big fan of how long the top is because it's not flattering on a lot of people, but if you fit, then ya...
This top is by Ben Sherman (also found on the Urban Outfitters website.) Unfortunately there aren't a lot of red striped tops on the internet. If you like this trend, look around your local shops and you'll be sure to find some.

Rumor Has It
So in a good ol' friday movie marathon yesterday, I finally got around to watching Rumor Has It. I've wanted to watch it for a while because I liked Jennifer Aniston in Friends, it looked like a chick flick and its been plastered all over the place trying to brainwash us into seeing it.

I didn't exactly read the summary before I went to see it so I didn't quite know exactly what to expect. But I must say, it was quite a strange movie. Usually one knows what the main character in the plot is thinking about, but in this case, I just wanted to shake her and ask her, "What the hell are you thinking???"

The plot was positively incestuous what with Jennifer Aniston's character sleeping with this guy (Kevin Costner) who has slept with not only her mother, but her grandmother as well!!! Kevin Costner's character, Beau Burroughs, being the infamous Benjamin Braddock from The Graduate.

Although admittedly her affianced, Mark Ruffalo, is not exactly very exciting being a not so handsome version of Benjamin Pratt with a little of Ray Romano in him. But anyone who can put up with her crazy actions is a keeper. On a side note, I love her grandmother Shirley Maclaine played. She was hilarious.

And lastly, I would just like to note how unfair the process of aging is. While this guy who could potentially be her DAD can be said to be in his prime, Jennifer Aniston just looked to be a little past hers. In some scenes in the movie, she really did looked old with very deep wrinkles on her forhead when she frowned (which was very often). Especially compared to her little sister, Mena Suvari played. Maybe I'm just so used to her as Rachael in Friends that its hard see her playing someone else.

Rock and Republic Pockets
I've always been intrigued with the Victoria Beckham for Rock and Republic jeans. So the other day at Sak's I finally tried on a pair for fun- and wow!
They looked and fit great! I happened to have picked the wider leg one (Victoria Beckham La Jeans), so it made me look taller and more slimming. The wash was also excellent, in a gorgeous even indigo shade with just a hint of those engineering effect. I must admit, I was very surprised. First because I didn't think much of Victoria Beckham as a designer (although she probably didn't design it completely on her own anyway....) and secondly because it is by Rock and Republic, and R&R never used to fit me so well, particularly around the butt. But alas, they are priced close to $300 and I'm not sure I'm prepared to pay that much for them. Especially when I haven't decided if those gold crowns are tacky or cool . . .
. . though i guess they are better than these skulls. At first glance, I really liked the intricate emblemic design. But once I realized there was a skull...well, lets just say they are not to my taste.
I much prefer their classic logo. Simple, sleek yet cool. Although by now, I must admit, it has become a bit boring seeing it on everywhere.
The gold stitching is a good twist to make it more interesting. Although again, it can potentially border on too much.Thoughts on these pockets?

REISS UK
When I was in San Francisco the other weekend, I discovered the coolest brand- REISS from the UK! Located on the first floor of the new Bloomies mall near Union Square, the simple, sophisticated, cool interior lured me in to explore the rest of the collection.
And I fell in love. The clothes there were elegantly simple and casual, with just the right amount of twist to make it look special. I am loving that casual white cardigan, I can totally see it as my summer staple over pretty camis. And those shift dresses are just soo cool.
The outfits for work are equally casual and cool. Note those vibrant shiny shorts and skinny belt!
And aren't these dresses just darling? They are so fun and youthful!
Positioned between high street multiples and designer brands, this brand is just what we need. I personally have my eyes on a blue/white striped cardigan and this grey jersey with a v-necked pattern, but alas, they were all way above my budget. Perhaps when they go on sale. . . .

One Of My Random Outfits...
A belt from Kate Moss Top Shop. I love the studs and that it's wraps around the waist two times. What I'm not too big on is the suade because it's such an easy-to-get-dirty material. Yes it's over-priced but I was in desperate need for a belt and it's hard for me to find a belt I actually like.Posted by SANJU at 5:40 PM 0 comments

Rock the Black Blazer
Meanwhile, I thought I would share my recent favourite way to wear it. Actually, it was the only outfit I wore during my last Christmas holidays: Skinny/straight leg jeans, a flowy long top with a blazer. It's simple yet looks so cool (love Sienna's outfit here). The blazer adds structure to the not-so-structured flowy top. And if you only wear black, grey and white, then you achieve a rock chick look like Lindsay here.
Blazers are also great for casual outfits, (for some reasons, people seem to be stuck with the idea that blazers are formal,) which is why I love it when Ashley wears it. Here are a few styling ideas from Ashley's outfits: you can try rolling up the sleeves and adding a colourful scarf to make the outfit look more casual (and warm). Blue jeans will of course, get you the more casual look, but black jeans feel cooler and edgier.OK, I should stop blabbering about how much I love blazers and spend more time looking for my perfect black one, (or ideally many many ones

Revlon Lash Jewels
The first time I saw the ad for the Revlon Lash Jewel in the mags, I thought, "Wow, they really are starting to run out of ideas. What are they going to come up with next?"
Because really, as pretty as the ad looks, why would you want to have drops of crystally things on your lashes. It doesn't really enhance your lashes to make it more dramatic or any longer. In fact, one would imagine that the extra weight will weigh down your lashes!
Despite my rationale however, I decided to give it a try anyway. I mean, who am I to argue against a whole team of Revlon product developers and researchers who probably spent hours and hours working on this product? So I carefully dripped the clear gel liquid onto my lashes trying VERY hard to get even droplets and ...... that sit! Its basically applying clear gel onto your lashes and the gel basically just stays there...like glue. It does not crystallize and shine or anything. Just sticks there like a blob of glue. And if you want it off, you can literally just pluck it off your lashes, like it was a piece of dirt. And my mom told me it looked like a piece of dirt too! Posted by SANJU at 5:22 PM 0 comments

Revlon Make-Up Eraser Pen
When I first saw the clipping from the magazines for this eye make-up eraser pen, I knew I had to have it. It was like they had read into my mind and knew I was looking for such a product (recall my previous musing on Jane Blog about dabbing a qtip with make-up remover, putting it in my purse and hope it still works later into the night). My friend told me she thought some brands already had such a thing, but still, this is the first time I've heard of it. So holding the $2 off coupon, I rushed out to the nearest Walgreens and picked one up (I was disappointed to find that it was not easily singled out amongst the products, in my mind, it should be placed on a pedestal).
What it basically is, is a spongy/felt tip pen that is soaked with eye make-up remover (not unlike my original idea, except they figured out a way that the eye make-up remover doesn't dry out). It doesn't quite magically cleans off eye make-up at a swipe of the pen, but more like it disburses minimal amounts of eye make-up remover and kind of smudges the area. I advised you to wipe the rest off with your fingers or a qtip to get maximum cleaning effect. Even though it is not as magical as I'd hope, so far I am loving it as I've discovered two ways of using it:
- To very quickly and effectively get rid of make-up screw ups during application. This is especially helpful when you are applying eye liner and you accidentally make a thicker line than you wanted. Then simply swipe off the extra bits and you'll be left with a perfect eye line.
- To get rid of those smudges that inadvertently creeps up after a few hours of application of eye make-up- even when they say its water proof! To avoid smudges completely, I heard using bases, avoiding water/sweating and keeping your lids oil free helps...but good luck with stopping natural body responses to the environment.
